Bill Stubbs has been involved in design, merchandising and marketing
for more than 30 years. He is president of William W. Stubbs and
Associates, an international interior design firm based in Houston,
and the firm's projects include multi-million dollar estates in exotic
locations, renovations of historical buildings, private homes,
commercial multi-family properties and most recently, the interior
design of a large corporate jet. But there is much more to Stubbs than
simply designing for the elite and wealthy; his award-winning design
of a full-care nursing facility demonstrates his passion for good
design in all spaces, including what is normally seen as a drab
institutional environment. His thorough and comprehensive study of all
aspects of nursing home life and resident restriction, coupled with a
strong desire to "lift the space far above customary limitations,"
inspired a luxurious-yet-simple design that continues to nurture the
spirits of residents, family and staff. As Stubbs says, "Luxury
doesn?t always necessitate a need for more."
Stubbs is a collector, and holds great respect for all collectors and
their collections, without limits as to status or sophistication. For
him, the challenge is to bring beauty and order to the display of
precious possessions. In his own home, he lovingly displays his
enormous collection of delicate blue and white porcelain in a
sometimes ordered, sometimes random manner throughout a masculine
environment dominated by deep, earthy tones. The effect is an
expression of his own idea of luxury through affection for the
familiar - the memory of each purchase, gift or inherited treasure.
Stubbs has become an ambassador to the masses by bridging the gap
between luxury and affordability. Personal style expressed through his
talent for design, knowledge of available resources and an ability to
transcend the practical without sacrificing affordability, is his
secret to success. Combining extensive experience with the high-end
market of the wealthy with his own humble beginnings and the
affordable practicality that is rooted therein, Stubbs is
well-equipped to orchestrate all the elements of comfort, excellence
and exclusivity in any environment. He calls his special touch "affordable luxury," and Stubbs' enthusiasm, energy, knowledge and
gift for design result in an unparalleled combination that always
delivers.
Stubbs has received awards from numerous professional organizations, including ASID and IIDA, and he is listed among the AD 100,
Architectural Digest's prestigious list of the World's Top Designers
and Architects. A much sought-after public speaker and guest lecturer
for audiences throughout the United States, Stubbs is the recipient of
the Champion of Literacy Award, which honors individuals who promote
the cause of literacy and who have made a difference through the
written word. He has made numerous TV appearances, and his work and
professional opinions have been published by dozens of magazines and
newspapers. Several of Stubbs' projects, including his own home, have
been the subjects of feature stories in Architectural Digest, and he
was most recently profiled in the September 2006 issue of the
publication. Stubbs is the author of I Hate Red, You're Fired! The
Colorful Life of an Interior Designer.
