La Griglia is one of Bill's favorite Houston restaurants.
Avalon Diner
2417 Westheimer
Tel: 713-527-8900
A Houston classic since 1938, this traditional diner serves up country breakfasts at all hours of the day; soda fountain malts, milkshakes and floats (made with Texas-proud Blue Bell ice cream, of course); plus diet-breaking diner specialties. Grandmother-approved blue plate specials include grilled pork chops, fried chicken, homemade meat loaf, roast turkey with dressing, and chicken and dumplings served with cornbread or rolls made fresh daily. Burgers, hot dogs and hearty diner sandwiches are all customer favorites. Don't miss the fresh squeezed lemon or limeade served in the mixing can -- perfect for quenching a summer thirst.
Fun Fact
The waitstaff all have the year they started working at the diner embroidered on their uniforms.

The funky older building has limited seating inside, but that's OK. It's more fun to grab your tray from the cafeteria-style line and head for the many picnic tables lined up outside on a covered patio. You can still hear the Willie Nelson music blasting away. Look for a curious mix of West U yuppies, blue-collar 'cue fans, Rice students and Montrose bohos.
