No space embodies the spirit of luxury and pampering than a bathroom,
and given that the average person spends 11,862 hours in the bathroom
over the course of their lifetime, why not pay it a little special attention?
Adjusting a few small details is all it takes to make a big difference.
Colors:
Choose a color theme that suits the overall
aesthetic you want to create in your bathroom. Deep reds with gold accessories
convey royalty; deep blues with white accessories capture an eastern,
nautical feel while cool blues with white accessories offers a softer,
provincial appeal. Greens can look tropical and exotic; creams, taupes
and browns can look natural and earthy and black and white is eternally
chic and modern. Bill recommends finding a picture of a space you like
and paying particular attention to how the colors also work with the
items in the room.
Doorknobs:
Generally overlooked, knobs are a quick and
easy way to add unique character to an otherwise unremarkable door.
Stop by a flea market during your travels or go to a local market or
hardware store and pick up an antique doorknob for a small touch of
luxury that can add something different and memorable to the everyday.
Mirrors:
For a personalized take on the mirror, try framing your own.
Depending on how much wall space you have, find a proportionate frame
that’s uniquely you and take it to a glass company or hardware
store that can cut a piece of mirror glass to fit your frame’s
specific dimensions. Once framed, mount the mirror above your sink,
toilette or among a group of family photos and see how it brightens
the day.
Textiles:
Find a piece of fabric you like and turn it
into an one-of-a-kind shower curtain. Measure the length of your shower
rod and get your fabric cut to size. An average shower curtain measures
approximately 72”x72”. If you don’t have enough fabric
for the entire curtain, consider supplementing it with another fabric
in alternating sewn panels.
Towels and Linens:
There is nothing like a plush towel
or face cloth to make you feel pampered, but not all towels and linens
are created equal. Egyptian and Turkish cotton with high thread-counts
offer great quality, but be wary of getting too high a thread count
(past 380) because the quality can actually be misleading. Manufacturers
will sometimes twist the threads during production in a way that allows
them to mark a higher thread count but that also weakens the sheet.
Find a sheet or towel that feels soft yet still durable. For an added
touch of luxury, have it monogrammed.
Plants:
Dried herbs and flowers like lavender, known for its soothing properties,
can be styled in a beautiful antique vase or ceramic planter and placed
on your sink to add a special sight or smell to your daily routine.
Objects:
Glass is a wonderfully versatile item that works in any bathroom. Try
repurposing fruit or mason jars by turning them into Q-tip holders or
sticking tea lights in jars and placing them on your window sill with
a book of matches that remind you of your favorite restaurant. |
