The Wine Museum of Paris is located in a 15th Century stone quarry that was converted by monks into a wine cellar in the 16th century and sat below what later became the residence of famous playwright and novelist Honoré de Balzac. Detailing the history of wine through tools, tours and tastings, this trip off the beaten track is one any grape enthusiast is sure to love. The museum also has a restaurant that is only open at lunch.

Designed by Philippe Starck, this museum successfully blends beautiful modern design with awe-inspiring artifacts, all made of crystal. Notice the 12-foot candelabra commissioned by Czar Nicholas of Russia that hangs in the hallway as you enter and stop into the elegant museum restaurant, The Cristal Room, before you go.

This beautiful dome-shaped museum built in 1900- the year after the Eiffel Tower was inaugurated-houses a fine collection of artwork, artifacts and furniture, as well as books and manuscripts. Standouts in the collection include Rembrandt’s Self-Portrait with Poodle and works of famous French Impressionists including Gauguin, Pisarro, Monet and Renoir.

Built between 1862-1875, this ornately gilt 2,200 seat opera can hold up to 450 artists at a time on its stage, qualifying it to house a number of breathtaking operas, ballets and concerts throughout the year.

Bricard Museum or Locksmith’s Museum

The Bricard Company, which specializes in decorative ironworks, bought this private mansion built in 1685 and carefully restored it to showcase a wonderful collection of Gallo-Roman iron, keys from the 16th-19th centuries, Gothic knockers from the Middle Ages and more. Look out for the 17th century lock with the false keyhole. It was built to shoot any burglar who foolishly tried to open it.
