Lima, Peru Attractions/Shopping

The Plaza de Armas
The Plaza de Armas is a great starting point for exploring Lima. Stand in the middle of this spacious and handsome square, by the 17th-centruy bronze fountain, and you are at the historic heart of the city. On the north side is the Government Palace, which was completed in 1938, and suffers from the past of Peru’s dictators of the time for grandiose French baroque. On weekdays at 12:45 pm, you can see the changing of the guard. The eastern side of the square is dominated by the cathedral, which was reconstructed many times due to earthquakes. Inside, the cathedral is large and unusually austere. Opposite the cathedral is the Municiplidad de Lima, or town hall. The pleasant interior includes a fine library. Next to it on the square is the headquarters of the Club de la Union, a lunchtime mixture of politicians and professionals.

The Cathedral of Lima
Located in The Plaza de Armas
There has been a church here since 1625 and the original design was made by Francisco Pizarro! Yes, the Spanish conqueror himself was responsible for the general layout of the church, which has changed over the years. The towers were added a couple hundred years later and the altar has also been changed over the years. Pizarro’s tomb is found inside the massive, cavernous church.

The business district of San Isidro and Miraflores are the main areas for shopping, restaurants, cafes and theatres. At the top end of Av. Larco is the Parque Kennedy, where artists sell paintings during the weekend. Next to the Pacifico Cinima is the Café Haiti, a prime spot for people-watching. Around the corner in Ricardo Palma, is the more upmarket Vivaldi Café. Walking down Diagonal you will find firstly great imported export-quality Peruvian coffe in the highly trendy Café Café and a little further on is a side street crammed with pizzerias with open-air tables. A cobbled road leads down a gully to the Costa Verde, as the sweep of beaches is called.

Govenors Palace
Located on the north side of the Main Square of Lima
One of the most important expressions of the apogee of the republican stage is the impressive Government Palace which interior decoration causes admiration for its beauty.,[1] The opulent Government Palace2 also called House of Government or House of Pizarro (Palacio de Gobierno, Casa de Gobierno or Casa de Pizarro in Spanish) is the official Residence of the President of Peru, and, as well, the seat of the executive offices.

The house of the Peruvian government headquarters has a unique beauty. It was built over a huge Indian burying ground (Waka) that had a shrine of a divinity whose Indian chief was Taulichusco. It has been through many alterations. The structure it now has, was built in the 20th century and suffers from the past of Peru’s dictators of the time for grandiose french baroque. It is as old as the city itself. Francisco Pizarro dreamed with its grandeur since he founded it. He chose among 117 neighbourhoods from the original blueprint, where would his residence, as governor of New Castile, be located. Place, which it now has. When the viceroyship was established, it turned to be the Viceroy’s Residence and therefore the Government’s Headquarters. It is a stately government building with a set of ornamental guards for the amusement of tourists and is easily recognizable by the large wrought iron fence that surrounds the building and lines one side of the Main Square (Plaza Mayor). It was enlarged in Field-Marshal Oscar R. Benavides’s governmental period and the architectural work ended. The main architect was Ricardo de Jaxa Malachowski and covered from 1937 to 1938, year in which it was finished exactly as it looks today.

The Inka markets in Miraflores
A few blocks northeast of Park Kennedy is where the markets are located. They have a wide variety of products from the Andes that are excellent souvenirs of Peru. Certainly, one should buy alpaca products, such as sweaters, capes and blankets—they are very warm on cold damp nights. Silver is the local metal, and turquoise is also native of Peru, so look for jewelry with those combinations.

Shopping Center Larcomar
Av. Malecon de La Reserva

Getting There: Larcomar is at Avenida Malecón de la Reserva 610, Miraflores, at the southern tip of Avenida José Larco. It’s about 12 blocks south of Parque Kennedy. Buses run the strip; a taxi from Parque Kennedy runs about a dollar (3.30 nuevo soles) each way.

Fom the street, Larcomar looks like a nice cliffside park with fountains, a few palm trees and a crowd of people perched along the railing looking out to sea. Walk a few steps down and discover a three-story mall, packed with restaurants, fast-food joints, shops, discos, a 12-screen movie theater and a 24-lane underground bowling alley. Larcomar is a mall, but also a destination because it’s a diverse jumble of entertainment under one roof, and its location perched on top of the cliffs behind Parque Salazar.

Visitors gather topside for nightly sunset shows, joined by shoppers taking a breather from the fanfare below. On clear, calm days, a paraglider may drift by on their way to the beaches below. The first mall level is open-air. Shoppers can browse under the sun, and watch daredevils on a ride get strapped to bungee cords and bounce around in a metal frame near the edge of the cliff. No one’s going over on this ride, but it looks like it from the rumble seat. Stores vary from mainstream jean and T-shirt shops to bookstores and boutiques that specialize in Peruvian handicrafts.

American staples like RadioShack, KFC and Burger King make an appearance here. People who forgot to pack guidebooks and film can find it at Larcomar, as well as sleeping bags and other outdoor gear at Tatoo Outdoors. There’s also a Western Union. People looking for more obscure things, like Che Guevara shirts, get directed to small trendy stores on Avenida José Larco. If you’re looking for crafts sold by the artists themselves or a bargain on crafts, Mercado de los Indios (Petit Thouars 5245) is a massive collection of artists and sellers under one roof. Larcomar’s draw is its dramatic location, feeling of secludedness, bustling Miraflores and its views of the Pacific.
